Last weekend was a fantastic outing for the Boulders youth climbing team. Having attended all 3 rounds of the BMC Youth Climbing Series this year, we’re proud to announce that 12 team members are through to the UK final, which will be held in Edinburgh on Saturday 15th June 2013.
The BMC Youth Climbing Series is a popular and fun competition for young climbers of all abilities. The competition features bouldering and top roping (ages 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13) and leading (ages 14-15 & 16-17).
The Welsh Final, held on Saturday 20th April at the Beacon Climbing Wall in Caernafon, was just one of the regional finals happening throughout the UK that day. Each age category had to complete 3 climbs and 3 boulder problems, with the climbs and problems getting progressively harder and points being awarded to the climbers that climbed the highest on each of them. At the end of the series, the top 3 climbers in each round qualified for the UK final.
Those who qualified for the UK final from the Boulders youth climbing team are as follows:
|Oscar Phillips||8-9 boys||2nd|
|Emily Phillips||10-11 girls||1st|
|Sophie Pockington||10-11 girls||3rd|
|Gabriel Harcombe||10-11 boys||3rd|
|Shani Llyr Evans||12-13 girls||1st|

Overall, Boulders entered 17 Academy climbers aged between the ages of 8 and 16. Of those, 12 from Boulders will be representing Wales in the UK final in June.
Each year, north and south Wales compete for points for a coveted trophy, which was brought back to the south – again!

In recognition of the talented young climbers who have qualified for the finals, Boulders top climbing coaches will be taking the 12 youngsters on a trip to Edinburgh for a training session prior to the finals in June, to give them a taste of the bigger climbing walls, which are triple the height of those in Boulders. Now, with less than 2-months before the UK final, we’d better get climbing!
We’re always on the lookout for talented climbers to bring into The Academy; it’s Boulders way of investing in talented young climbers and nurturing the next generation of athletes. Click here for more information about the Boulders Academy.
