Boulders recently organised for Contour Outdoor instructors Andi Turner and Bob Thomas to run a series of free climbing workshops at Boulders exclusively for our GOLD Members. Climbers wishing to improve and develop their technique and those looking to make the move from the wall to outdoor sport crags were invited. Demand for all courses was so high they were all booked within 24-hours of being advertised.
We’d like to thank Contour Outdoor for running the sessions and congratulate those who braved the freezing cold elements on the day to attend the sessions!
Here’s what Florence Martellini had to say about the “Moving from indoors to outdoors for the sport climber” session, which she attended along with her husband and daughter:
“Who are we? We are two adults and a child of ten who started to climb a year ago. We ventured into outdoor climbing last summer for the first time in France and hired a guide, which was great to get reliable advice about the local mountaineering scene for a couple of hours, to be shown how to lead climb and how to tie ourselves in safely when we had reached the top. This introduction enabled us to taste outdoor climbing for a week in a safe environment, offered easy access, was very well equipped and adapted to beginners like us.
Since then we haven’t had a chance to climb outdoors again, nor do we know much about the specifics of climbing in the UK, so the Contour Outdoor training day offered by Boulders was a great opportunity to fill this gap. The day introductory course was a mix of theory and practice. The morning was dedicated to making us aware of what we need to bear in mind when deciding to venture outdoors for climbing i.e. weather, access, emergency and equipment in a British context and compared to other countries. In the afternoon, we focused on knots and different ways of securing ourselves for the descent. We initially practiced several times in groups of two or three at ground level and then in a real situation at the top of the wall with Bob, our friendly instructor.
Bob Thomas’ thoroughness and ability to engage with his audience brought out his life experience – he is someone who knows what works, what doesn’t and where the dangers are, which is important when practicing a sport such as rock climbing, which can be dangerous if safety is overlooked. Even more so in the mountains, which is a world with its own unique requirements.
Bob’s team partner, the world renowned climber Andi Turner, joined us in the afternoon and brought his high expertise and calm to the session. Andi came across as being a much grounded guy for someone who spends his time climbing, which shows that mindfulness is key to the sport. We are very pleased to have had a ‘refresher’ and another viewpoint on climbing outdoors.
We recommend Contour Outdoors sessions to anyone who has little or no experience in this field. A detail for families: two of the participants were just turning ten and fitted in very well.”
Others on the same course gave some extremely positive feedback: “I completed 6as that I previously had not been able to do” and “Clear instruction, reassurance and expert knowledge”.
Boulders highly recommends Contour Outdoor for all those wishing to take their climbing further. For more information about the many courses they offer visit their website at: http://www.contouroutdoor.co.uk/
