Belay devices, possibly the most important piece of climbing equipment

Without belay devices, most other climbing gear becomes a bit useless! A belay device is usually the first piece of climbing gear that most people buy, so it's important to get the best one for your needs. Most belay devices have two slots in the top, for belaying with two ropes when trad or winter climbing, but are also completely at home using single ropes when indoors or sport climbing. Belay devices with grooves for the rope to sit in usually give more 'bite', great if you're belaying a partner much heavier than youself.
