Climbing Instructor Training

Climbing instructor training - If you are a teacher or youth group leader, with an interest in climbing, perhaps you could benefit from becoming an instructor and supervising your own groups at Boulders.

To do this you'll have to gain the Climbing Wall Award (CWA), a nationally recognised award governed by the Mountain Training UK.

To be involved in the CWA scheme you'll need to register with the MTUK and be a climber with an interest in the supervision of novices. The course is made up of a two day training course followed by one day’s assessment, normally separated by at least a three month consolidation period.

To attend the two day training course you must have:

  1. Six months personal climbing experience.
  2. Registered with Mountain Training UK - see their website to register
  3. Own a MTUK logbook - see their website to gain a logbook

In addition you must have logged the following in your MTUK logbook:

  1. At least fifteen occasions when you have climbed indoors.
  2. Visited at least three different climbing centres and climbed at each of them.
  3. Successfully completed a number of  lead climbs at indoor climbing centres.

If you are not at this level you may not apply for the training course.

If you have these prerequisites then you will be able to join a CWA training course.

On passing the CWA training course you will need to put your newly learned skills into practice over a minimum of three month consolidation period before taking a CWA assessment.

On successfully completing the CWA assessment and being awarded the CWA, you will be able to lead up to nine Supervised Climbers at Boulders as an External instructor.
