Geckos club is our kids club that develops their lead climbing skills, and is a bit different from the others in that in order to join children have to have achieved their level 3 NICAS or equivalent. This can be done by completing Spider Monkeys club or externally. Because of the nature of lead climbing, there can be no exceptions to this rule.
However achieving NICAS levels is not the sole aim of Geckos! The club aims to help young, experienced climbers and help them take another step into the world of more advanced techniques and lead climbing. Climbers will learn how to lead climb safely, how to assess the hazards of lead climbing, how to lead belay skilfully with a selection of belay devices, and more.
The important info:
Geckos clubs are a 6 week course that runs alongside the school half terms
Courses run on Saturdays and Sundays from 09:40-11:00, or Thursdays from 17:00-18:20. Each session lasts for 80 minutes.
Young climbers need to have graduated from Spider Monkeys / completed their NICAS level 3 to join
There is a graduation course after Spider Monkeys to bridge the gap between the two clubs. Invitation to the graduation course is at Boulders discretion.
£85pp for the 6 week course
GOLD member price: £42.50!
What is NICAS?
NICAS stands for ‘National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme’ and is a nationally recognised award for young climbers learning to climb indoors. There are 5 levels to NICAS, ranging from complete beginner to competent top roping and lead climber. The NICAS syllabus uses a log book system where climbs and achievements are recorded and signed by an instructor. More info about NICAS can be found on their website, at www.nicas.co.uk
Does my child need any experience to join Geckos?
Yes, your child will need to have completed their NICAS Level 3, and have completed a ‘Graduation Course’ with us. If your child has completed NICAS Level 3 with us in Spider Monkeys, their instructor will talk to you about completing the Graduation Course. If your child has completed their NICAS Level 3 at another centre then please call us to arrange attendance on a Graduation Course.
Does my child need any equipment?
All the equipment your child will need is included in the price of the course. Your child will wear a harness, and can either wear their trainers or try on some climbing shoes (also included).
What is a GOLD membership?
A Boulders GOLD membership is a monthly direct debit that entitles the holder to come climbing as often as they like for one fixed monthly fee. The membership also entitles the holder to 50% off all courses. More info about GOLD memberships can be found here.
My child is really enjoying climbing, and I would like to learn how to belay so I can bring my child more. How do I do this?
This is a great idea! A parent can supervise up to two novices when they are registered as ‘competent’, and there is no charge if you are only belaying. As a parent, you can either book onto an Introduction to Climbing Course (more info here) or book onto a parent Learn to Belay course. We also run parent Lead Belaying courses, so ask reception when the next course is running!
