Spider Monkeys club is for children aged 10 and over and introduces a more technical aspect to climbing. It’s during this club that belaying and knot tying is introduced, and children are also taught how climbing works, including safety elements and consideration for other climbers. And of course, there’s lots of climbing and fun involved!
Boulders currently teaches the NICAS syllabus (more info about NICAS can be found at the bottom of the page) which helps our instructors as they provide a good basis of climbing knowledge, including transferable skills such as team work, co-ordination, and communication.

What is NICAS?
NICAS stands for ‘National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme’ and is a nationally recognised award for young climbers learning to climb indoors. There are 5 levels to NICAS, ranging from complete beginner to competent top roping and lead climber. The NICAS syllabus uses a log book system where climbs and achievements are recorded and signed by an instructor. More info about NICAS can be found on their website, at www.nicas.co.uk
Does my child need any experience to join Spider Monkeys?
No, children don’t need any experience before coming to Spider Monkeys. Children must be 10 years old. Some children will have attended Pumas classes before, but this is not necessary.
Does my child need any equipment?
All the equipment your child will need is included in the price of the course. Your child will be provided with a harness, and can either wear their trainers or try on some climbing shoes (also included).
How does my child ‘move up’ to Geckos?
To move up from Spider Monkeys to Geckos, a child must have completed their NICAS Level 3, and also attended a ‘Graduation Course’ at Boulders. When your child has completed their level 3, their instructor will chat to you about your child attending a Graduation Course. Graduation Courses are invitation only, and will teach your child the basics of Lead climbing.
What is a GOLD membership?
A Boulders GOLD membership is a monthly direct debit that entitles the holder to come climbing as often as they like for one fixed monthly fee. The membership also entitles the holder to 50% off all courses. More info about GOLD memberships can be found here.
My child is really enjoying climbing, and I would like to learn how to belay so I can bring my child more. How do I do this?
This is a great idea! A parent can supervise up to two novices when they are registered as ‘competent’, and there is no charge if you are only belaying. As a parent, you can either book onto an Introduction to Climbing Course (more info here) or book onto a parent Learn to Belay course.
