What is your name? Sophie Morton

How did you get introduced to climbing? When I was three years old, I had boundless energy and climbed all over the furniture. My parents thought it would be safer to channel the energy into climbing. I started three months off my fourth birthday.

Where is your favourite place to climb? It has to be the ‘psycobloc’ at The Boardroom Climbing Centre, Deeside.

Describe your best climbing experience! Where was it, when was it, with whom and why? My very first time I climbed outside July 2017. It was at Box Bay, Porthcawl with Daniel Hobbs. My older sisters and brother climbed as well. The weather was prefect and we ate a delicious picnic to celebrate Dan’s birthday.

What's your favourite piece of climbing kit and why? My climbing shoes. I love the experience of trying different ones on, then wearing them out!

Why do you climb? I climb because it is great fun. I thoroughly enjoy it and I have made so many new friends.

What would your advice be to someone thinking about trying climbing for the first time? Go for it. Have fun. Try your best. Enjoy it.

What's your favourite food? Sharon’s jacket potatoes with extra butter and cucumber sticks.

What’s your #1 most played song? ‘Dance Monkey’ by Tones and I.

What is the last book you read? ‘Judy Moody Around the World in 8 ½ days’ by MeganMcDonald.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why? Austria, to compete in the Youth Festival of Colours. I was meant to attend this June but it was cancelled due to COVID-19. I would of been the youngest competitor.

If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would it be and why? Conrad Anker. He has climbed the Shark’s Finn.

What would be your perfect day? Firstly I would have pancakes from breakfast. Then climb outside for a few hours, after that swimming for a few hours and finish the day having a sleepover at my niece’s house.

Fun Fact about you? I can sign a few pop songs in Makaton sign language.

Please feel free to share some information about what you do - plug your business, your work, your fundraising, your Instagram, anything! I’m currently fund raising for ‘Climbers Against Cancer’. I plan to climb the equivalent of Ben Nevis on an auto belay during one session. This will equate to 200 climbs. Hopefully this will be held on the 7th August when centres reopen. If you can support me in any way I would be very grateful.
