🎉 New Year, New Climbing Goals at Boulders! 🧗

Why Set Climbing Goals?

We like to think climbing isn’t just a sport; it's a lifestyle, and an ongoing process of self-improvement. Setting specific climbing goals can help you enhance your skills, boost both your physical fitness and mental wellbeing, and help you get the most from your time on the wall. Imagine topping a route that once seemed like it was impossible, or finally mastering that technique you've been working on.

The nice thing about climbing goals is that they don't have to be solitary; why not team up with one of your regular climbing partners to come up with a joint goal? Just remember to go easy on yourself and don’t forget that at the end of the day, as legendary alpine climber Alex Lowe once said, “The best climber is not the fastest or the strongest, but the one having the most fun.”

Here are our suggestions for  climbing specific New Year’s Resolutions:

  • Master a New Technique: Whether it's perfecting your footwork, improving your grip strength, or learning how to get the most from new type of hold, focus on one aspect of your climbing technique to enhance.

  • Climb a Specific Route or Grade: Set your sights on a particular grade that you want to break through this year, or maybe even a specific route. Break it down into manageable parts, work out where your weaknesses lie, and work on them until you crack it. Consider getting some professional coaching if you’re struggling to make the next move. Check out the different coaching options at Cheltenham, Culverhouse Cross and Newport Road.

  • Go on a Climbing Adventure: Plan a trip to a climbing destination you've always wanted to visit. The world of climbing is huge, and can take you to some of the world’s most incredible places; some of them right here on our doorstep. There are some great adventures to be had without even getting in the car - take the train to Chepstow and explore the Wye Valley crags on foot, or use the Taff Trail to discover the crags of the South Wales Valleys.

  • Give Back to the Community: Commit to cleaning up your local crag, mentoring new climbers or volunteering at events like the BMC Youth Climbing Series. Climbing is as much about community as it is about the moves, so dive in and discover the wide world of climbing that exists all around Boulders.

Remember, the key to achieving your resolutions is consistency and a positive mindset. Track your progress, celebrate your successes, and don't be too hard on yourself if you have any setbacks. Climbing is as much about the journey as it is about the destination!

We can't wait to hear about your climbing adventures and achievements in 2024; tag @bouldersuk whenever you’re posting about your climbing wins for a shout out!

Here's to reaching new heights together this year!
